AND WE'RE BACK

defib

You know what I appreciate about defibrillators? They can pluck a stopped heart from the grave, and put a beating one in it. It’s the ultimate life-giving/life-taking machine. Are there many out there like it? Remember the 1990 film Flatliners*? Medical students (Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Kiefer Sutherland — a pantheon of stars, really) induce near-death experiences for the thrill of it, but then things go horribly awry, as things are apt to do. They die, they return, but their memories return with them in dangerously corporeal form. It’s a rather nifty interpretation of the metaphorical life, death, and resurrection of the human heart post-heartbreak. You die, you return, but in the process you end up dredging up all the attendant crap, which you then have to deal with lest it kill you. Metaphorically, of course.

At any rate, it’s been a while. The heart, true to its dramatic roots, stopped, and thus the hands too, and therefore no writing for quite some time. A few shocks to the system later, we’re up and running again. Oh hi.

* it was nominated for an Oscar in 1991, did you know that? I didn’t.
